3.12.34.

Encloses correspondence regarding complaints of inaccurate Hong Kong assays of Chinese tin, for such action as may be considered necessary.

It is difficult to be sure that the

samples taken for the examinations recorded in the

two assay certificates enclosed in Messrs.Strauss'

letter of the 9th November were both taken from the

if they were from the same consiguement same consignment of tin. It is conceivable that

the Government Analyst's assay, which was based

on samples from 201 slabs, was correct notwithstand-

ing the fact that Messrs.Griffith and Company, who

may have ta en their sample from one of the slabs

which was not assayed by the Government Analyst,

found that the tin content of their sample was less

than the tin content of those assayed by the

Government Analyst.

We should (i) send copies of (1) and

enclosures including copies of the two certificates of

assay enclosed in Messrs.Strauss' letter of 9.11.34

to Hong Kong u/c a short despatch asking for

observations.

(ii) inform Messrs.Strauss reference their letter of

9.11.34 that a copy of the correspondence and copies

of the two certificates of assay enclosed w/c that

letter are being sent to the Governor of Hong Kong

for observations and say that a further communication

will be sent to him in due course; and return the

original certificates to them.

(iii) send copies of the despatch and letter to C.A.
